Fungi Dispersal
Chapter 16: Fungi

Because fungi are stationary organisms, their means of propagation must include easy dispersal as well as structures that are capable of surviving harsh environmental conditions. Recently, scientists have discovered that sea fans in Caribbean coral reefs are dying at an alarming rate. After isolating and culturing an organism that damaged the coral, they identified it as one of the many species of Aspergillus fungus, native to the deserts of Africa.

Analyze the Information

  1. How do you think spores of the Aspergillus fungi reached the coral reefs in the Caribbean?
  2. Based on what you know about spores, how were these spores able to survive such a long journey?
