Do Seedlings Respond to Light
Chapter 19: Response and Reproduction in Plants

Plants often grow in response to cues from their environment. These responses called tropisms, result from stimuli such as light, water, gravity, and touch. You can observe the response of seedlings to light when you…

Try This

  1. Soak four bean seeds in water overnight.
  2. Fill two small flower pots with potting soil. Place two of the soaked bean seeds in each of the pots. Dampen the soil with water.
  3. Place both pots on a countertop or windowsill where they will get sun.
  4. Obtain a cardboard box and cut a hole in the side of the box. Place one of the pots in the box and cover it, making sure that the only light in the box comes from the hole that you cut.
  5. Over the next two weeks, water the seeds and observe the seedlings.

Analyze Your Results

  1. What differences in growth did you observe in the two different conditions?
  2. What is the name of the tropism you observed?
