What Can You Learn from Tree Ring Data
Chapter 18: Energy, Transport, and Growth in Plants
Alternating production of spring wood and summer wood produces observable growth rings. Variations in the width of growth rings can reveal information about environmental conditions during specific time periods. Use the growth ring data in the table to answer the following questions.
| Year |
Width of Growth Ring (cm) |
| 1985 |
1.0 |
| 1986 |
1.0 |
| 1987 |
2.0 |
| 1988 |
3.0 |
| 1989 |
0.5 |
| 1990 |
1.5 |
| 1991 |
1.5 |
| 1992 |
1.5 |
Analyze the Table
- In which year was there the most growth?
- What environmental conditions may have contributed to this growth?
- In which year was there the least growth?
- What environmental conditions may have affected the tree's slow growth in this year?
- If the tree had only these rings, what is the age of this tree?
