Analyzing Flowering Conditions
Chapter 19: Response and Reproduction in Plants

In many plants, flowering time is linked to length of daylight and darkness. Botanists group plants into long-day plants, short-day plants, and day-neutral plants based on their response to specific photoperiods. Use the data given to analyze the type of responses in different plants.

Plant Day Length (hours)
lettuce more than 12
radish more than 12
ragweed less than 12
chrysanthemum less than 12
corn more than 12
soybeans less than 12

Analyze the Table

  1. Which plants are long-day plants?
  2. Which plants are short-day plants?
  3. Why can long-day plants also be called short-night plants?
  4. During which season would you expect long-day plants to flower? Short-day plants?
