Analyzing Flowering Conditions
Chapter 19: Response and Reproduction in Plants
In many plants, flowering time is linked to length of daylight and darkness. Botanists group plants into long-day plants, short-day plants, and day-neutral plants based on their response to specific photoperiods. Use the data given to analyze the type of responses in different plants.
| Plant |
Day Length (hours) |
| lettuce |
more than 12 |
| radish |
more than 12 |
| ragweed |
less than 12 |
| chrysanthemum |

| corn |

| soybeans |

Analyze the Table
- Which plants are long-day plants?
- Which plants are short-day plants?
- Why can long-day plants also be called short-night plants?
- During which season would you expect long-day plants to flower? Short-day plants?
