Buoyancy Control
Chapter 25: Fishes and Amphibians
Most fishes have a swim bladder that helps them move up and down in the water or remain at a given depth. Without a swim bladder, a fish would have to constantly move in order to prevent itself from sinking. You can model the buoyancy control of a swim bladder if you
Try This
- Fill a sink or a large basin with water. Inflate a balloon to its fullest volume and tie. Inflate a second identical balloon partially full and tie.
- Attempt to submerge each balloon in the water. Note the degree of difficulty needed to submerge each balloon.
Analyze Your Results
- Which balloon was easier to submerge? Why?
- Explain how the balloons illustrate the function of a swim bladder in fishes.
