Chapter 17 - Introduction to Plants

You'd probably be surprised at the variety of plants and plant products that can be easily observed around you. Living plants are used in landscaping, and plant parts feed us, season our foods, and are even useful as medicines. To embark on a virtual voyage in pursuit of plants and their parts, visit the sites listed below.
Medicinal Plants - Images by Common Name
There are more than 1000 photos and drawings of plants with medicinal properties on this site from the University of Washington. To look at the photos, simply scroll through the list then click on a name to see the image.
Herb Research Foundation
Visit this site to learn about how herbs can be used to improve health. The latest news on research and regulatory issues is also included.
Latin American Plant Gallery
This is part of the Missouri Botanical Garden site. It's unlikely that most of these plants are actually in your coummunity, although some of their relatives or products may be. In any case, the exhibit provides an opportunity to see photos of some interesting tropical plants. You can click on the photos to enlarge the images.
Would you like to plan a real trip to study plants a bit closer to home? Is there a botanical garden or arboretum near you? To find out, use the state list or clickable map on Botanique. If a garden has a home page, you can link to it from this site. Otherwise, you can use the phone number and address to get more information.
