CHAPTER 18: Energy, Transport, and Growth in Plants

18.1 PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN PLANTS

The Amazing Story of Kudzu
The story traces kudzu's history in the South, from celebrated garden plant, to weed, to respected (?) cash crop. The story is laced with color photographs of the vine and links about kudzu, including one for kudzu tea. It is found at the Web site of the University of Alabama Center for Public Television & Radio.

Stomata
This short article from Micscape Magazine, an amateur microscopy magazine, explains how stomata are able to open and close. The article is accompanied by photographs of magnified stomata and their chloroplasts.

Plant Adaptations
How have plants adapted to maximize photosynthesis while minimizing water loss? This article from Micscape Magazine addresses that topic, illustrating several adaptations with microscopic images of leaf and stem structures.

18.2 TRANSPORT IN PLANTS

Dr. Botnic — Plant Transport Systems
How is the inside of a plant similar to a multi-lane highway? Find out from Dr. Botnic at this site from Windowbox.com. Be sure to check out the links to related articles on plant structure.

Plant Tissues
This page uses text and simple diagrams to focus on the vascular tissues, xylem, and phloem. Brief descriptions of what they are and what they do are included in this Web site by Ross Koning, an instructor at Eastern Connecticut State University.

18.3 PLANT GROWTH

Virtual Plant Animations
You'll find plenty of movies on plant development and growth at this Cooperative Research Centre for Tropical Pest Management page. Click on either Images or Animations to see the plants.

Ultimate Tree Ring Web Pages
Henri D. Grissino-Mayer, a professor at the University of Arizona, has cataloged the huge amount of information on the Internet about dendrochronology--the art of reading tree rings. Especially useful is the resources for dendrochronologists because the links are organized by question.

Talking Trees: A Living Diary of Climate
What do trees have to tell us about the climate of years past? Find out how dendrochronologists are using tree rings to learn more about global climate change from this page in the Climatologist's Toolbox Web site.

How a Corn Plant Develops
Containing more corn information than all but a farmer would need, this page features photographs of corn stalks and roots at every stage of development. This Iowa State agriculture site also looks at nutrient use and anatomy changes as a corn plant matures.
