1 a. It shows a mouse leaping, which conveys the rodent's high activity level.

b. It reveals that rodents are indeed active creatures, their energy stored in
chemical bonds in the food they eat. This energy is released by chemical bonds.
In fact, all of an organism's life processes depend on chemical reactions.

c. They show as well as tell how a mouse uses chemical reactions to carry out all
its life processes.


2 a. You can see the color change from being mostly at the bottom of the beaker to
being evenly spread throughout the beaker.

b. If the beaker size is always the same, then the only difference from one
photograph to the next is the spreading out of the dye.


3. The artist shows how the shape of a cell changes as it shrivels or swells.


4 a. The steps are shown in a circle.

b. For ATP, the artist has used warm colors and a starburst shape to show that it
has a lot of energy. For ADP, the artist has used cool colors and a smooth shape
to show that it has less energy than ATP has.

c. Using the same colors and shapes reminds you of the differences between
ATP and ADP. It also helps you see at a glance where energy changes take
place.
