DISTINGUISHING FACTS FROM OPINIONS


1. Read "The Critic's Corner" on page 586 and identify each sentence as a fact or opinion. Then explain your answers by citing examples from each sentence. The first one is done for you:

a. Sentence #1 is a fact.
The information can be verified in a reliable source.

 

 

2. Read the second "Spotlight on Careers" on page 587, as Dr. Joshua Feingold explains his work as a visiting professor of marine biology. First identify each sentence as a fact or opinion. Then explain your answers by citing examples from each sentence.

 

 

3. Read the passage "Saving the Coral Reefs" on page 498. List four facts and one opinion in the passage.

 

 

 

4. Read Section 22.2 on page 530. Then write five facts about mollusks. How can you verify these facts about mollusks?

 

 

 

5. Look at Figure 22.26 on page 539 and read the caption. If you had a bad bruise, would you allow a doctor to treat it with leeches? Write a few sentences to answer the question.

 

 

 

6. Read your response to question 5. Identify the facts and opinions that you stated.
