e.Predictions may include: Section 28.3 will define learned behavior. It will tell how animals learn new behavior patterns. The section will explain how different kinds of learning take place.

2. Questions may include: How is learned behavior different from other kinds of behavior? How can you teach an animal a new behavior? How can you learn to solve problems?

3. Details may include:
details that distinguish learned behavior from innate behavior
details about habituation
details about imprinting
details about classical conditioning
details about operant conditioning
details about reasoning and problem solving

4. Learned behavior is developed as a result of experience. It is not inborn. Habituation is a kind of behavior in which an animal learns to ignore some repeated, unimportant stimulus. Imprinting is a long-lasting kind of behavior that can be learned only when an animal is very young. In classical conditioning, an animal's reflexes are trained to respond to a new stimulus. Operant conditioning is a kind of trial-and-error learning. In reasoning, a new problem is solved by the application of what has already been learned.

5. Answers will vary, depending on students' predictions.
