Fish-Smart Markets
Chapter 25 - Fishes and Amphibians

Seafood is a delicious and healthy source of protein, but to be at its best, it must be properly harvested and stored. To learn about the kinds of seafood available, the seafood industry, and the proper ways to store and prepare seafood, visit the following sites.

    NOAA Fisheries
This site is provided by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), which is a part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The organization supports the domestic and international conservation and management of our marine resources.
    Seafood Information and Resources
This is part of the Food and Drug Administration's site. It explains in detail the F.D.A.'s seafood programs, and provides seafood safety information and a telephone number that you can call with questions. For an interesting account of what it's like to be an F.D.A. inspector onboard a fishing ship, visit the page entitled Inside FDA: Hazardous Duty in the Bering Sea.
    Seafood Safety: Questions and Answers
An online pamphlet from the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service answers such questions as "Is it alright to cook dead crabs?" and "Are puffer fish safe to eat?"
    Western Fishboat Owners Association
Have you even wondered what it might be like to be an albacore fisherman? Exploring this site will give you a good idea. Check out weather data from Guam, swell heights in California harbors, and how to handle tuna on board. You might even find out how fisherman do their banking from the middle of the ocean.
