Look! Up in the Sky!
Chapter 26 - Reptiles and Birds
Birdwatching is a marvelous hobby that can be enjoyed by people
of all ages. Just about everyone can get started in birdwatching
by simply walking out their door and taking a look around. From
city streets to country lanes, birds are almost everywhere. To
get a handle on the identity of your local birds and the people
who are watching them, visit the following sites.
- National Audubon Society
Home Page
- From this page you can learn about this national organization
and their efforts in bird conservation, link to their magazine
and other birding information, and locate local Audubon Society
chapters in your state.
- Real
Birds
- Want to know if any unusual birds have been spotted in your
area? If so, you can use the clickable map on this site to access
Rare Bird Alerts (reports of unusual bird sightings). This page
is part of the Virtual
Birder, which bills itself as an Internet magazine for birders.
From here you can also link to other bird-watching organizations
and related sites.
- Cornell Lab of Ornithology
- Here's an opportunity to get involved in the scientific study
of birds. Individuals or classes can join in the lab's projects,
and everyone can use their extensive collection of resources.
For information about some specific types of birds that may
live near you, try these sites:
- The Raptor Center
- Information about birds of prey from the University of Minnesota.
- Hummingbirds
- This site has information about where these tiny energetic birds are found,
how to attract and observe them, and their behavior and natural
