Three New Lemur Species Found (November 17, 2000)

Three new mouse lemur species have been found in Madagascar. Conservation International.

Scientists working in Madagascar have discovered three new mouse lemur species, the world's smallest primates. Madagascar is the world's only home to about 40 lemur species, including two previously unknown mouse lemur species. Lemurs are among the world's most endangered animals.

The three newly-discovered lemur species inhabit the dry, dense forests along the island's western coast. They are chipmunk-sized and weigh only a few ounces. Mouse lemurs are nocturnal primates that eat beetles, fruit, and plants.

Madagascar split off from the African continent about 165 million years ago. Many of its plant and animal species are unique to the island. In recent decades about 90% of its original forests have been chopped down, threatening the survival of primates and many other animals.
