Bolivia Soaked by Heavy Rains (January 15, 2003)

Heavy El Niño-related rains touched off flooding across parts of Bolivia. The rains caused several major rivers including the San Julian and Chutacaua to overflow their banks. About 6, 500 people in seventeen communities, mostly in the Santa Cruz region, have been affected.

The floods swamped roads and bridges, cutting off people in remote parts of the country. Thousands of acres of cropland are under water. The Red Cross, Pan American Health Organization, and other relief organizations are working to bring emergency supplies to flooded areas.
