Antarctica's Mount Erebus, the southernmost volcano in the world, remains active. The volcano's alert code remains at "orange" meaning it is currently erupting or may erupt at any time. Its periodic eruptions come from a lava lake within its summit cone. The cone has been the sight of frequent gas eruptions and lava flows.
Mount Erebus is found on Antarctica's Ross Island. It is one of only a handful of volcanoes in the world with a long-lived lava lake that has remained intact for decades. The volcano covers an area of about 400 square miles (1,000 square kilometers). About 15 percent of its surface is made up of exposed lava flows.
