Tropical Cyclone Jokwe brought more rain to already waterlogged Mozambique. The cyclone, which packed winds of up to 125 mph (200 km/h), was blamed for at least sixteen deaths.
The violent storm destroyed nearly 20,000 homes in Nampula Province in the northern part of the country. Thousands of people were left homeless. The cyclone knocked down power poles and trees and triggered widespread floods.
After causing havoc in the north, Jokwe swirled southward and made the already bad flood situation there even worse. Earlier this year, floods left thousands homeless across southern Mozambique and in several neighboring countries as well.
