A strong winter storm sunk its teeth into Western Europe this week, blanketing the region with snow and shutting down transportation. England had its heaviest snowfall in 18 years, with parts of London covered with up to 8 inches (20 cm). Heavy snow was also repoted in Paris, Madrid, and other major cities of Western Europe. Temperatures plunged as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 10 degrees Celsius) in some areas.
All across the region, schools and businesses were shut down. Air and rail travel slowed to a crawl. Hundreds of people were temporarily stranded at airports. Three storm-related deaths were reported in Italy, while two climbers were killed on Mount Snowdon in Wales.
