Dengue and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever
Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever are mosquito-borne diseases caused by a virus. Symptoms of dengue fever include severe headaches, high fever, joint and muscle pain, and a rash.
Dengue fever lasts from 5 to 7 days. There is no specific treatment available, although patients who experience severe cases of the disease may be given oxygen and IV fluids. The hemorrhagic form of dengue fever is much more severe and results in death in 50% of the untreated cases.
The World Helath Organization (WHO) estimates that tens of millions of people around the world are infected each year, with about 95% of the cases occurring in children.
