Leprosy

Leprosy is a chronic skin disease caused by bacteria that attack the nerve endings, thus impeding the body's ability to feel pain. The deformation associated with leprosy comes not from digits (fingers and toes) falling off but from their cartilage being reabsorbed into the body.

It is believed that leprosy can be spread between people through prolonged close contact. About 95% of the world's population has a natural immunity to the disease.

Although there is no vaccine against leprosy, it is curable. A complete cure generally takes between 6 months and 2 years, depending on the severity of the case.
