Tropical storms are huge, circulating storms with sustained winds from 39 to 73 miles per hour that from from low-pressure areas called tropical depressions. Once the winds of the storm increase to at least 74 miles per hour, the storm is considered a hurricane. When hurricanes occur in the western Pacific Ocean, west of the International Date Line, they are called typhoons. When they are in the Indian Ocean and the Coral Sea, they are called cyclones. Whatever they are called, they spell trouble. The winds, rains, and storm surges caused by hurricanes and tropical storms wreak havoc wherever they go.
